Our Nonprofit Leadership Academy (NLA) is designed for nonprofit executive directors, those who aspire to an executive position, and senior leadership teams that are leading staff and working with the board. Participants develop best practices for strategic thinking, organizing, and dealing with change.

NLA fosters supportive relationships among new and experienced executive directors and senior leadership while encouraging self-development and professional growth. Past participants have found tremendous value in getting to know their cohorts and discussing each other’s challenges and successes within their respective organizations.

As a new Executive Director, the Nonprofit Leadership Academy couldn’t have come at a better time. This experience gave me exactly what I needed to grow in this role—real tools, real conversations, and real connections that I’ll carry with me as I lead the York County Reentry Coalition. Each session built on the next, helping me think more strategically, lead more intentionally, and stay grounded in the mission.

One of the sessions that stayed with me the most was led by Samm Smeltzer. She guided us through what it means to protect our energy and restore balance—something that felt so needed in a space where burnout is real. Her approach reminded me that strong leadership starts with taking care of yourself first. It was a personal reset that I didn’t even know I needed with practical tips I’ve shared and encouraged with my staff

I also enjoyed our deep dive into fundraising. Hearing from local leaders who’ve built successful campaigns helped take the fear out of “the ask” and reframed it as something deeply relational and mission-driven. It reminded me that fundraising is really about storytelling and inviting people into the impact.

What really made this program special, though, was the chance to connect with and learn from other leaders doing powerful work across York County. We were a diverse group with different missions, but the same heart for change. That peer connection and encouragement was a huge part of the magic.

The Nonprofit Leadership Academy was more than just leadership training—it was an investment in myself, my work, and the future of our community. I’m proud to be part of the Class of 2025.
